If keeping sheep is a new experience for you, some friendly help and advice along the way can help you to “find your feet” during the first few years whilst you are establishing your flock.
Exmoor Horn sheep are a good breed for those getting started; they are hardy, good doers who will “look after themselves” given all their essential needs are met. Compared to many other breeds of sheep, the Exmoor Horn is docile and easy to handle throughout the year, including lambing time.
As with all livestock, keeping sheep is an ongoing process of learning. One of the benefits of being a member of the Exmoor Horn Sheep Breeders Society is that all members, whatever their experience, can seek advice and exchange ideas with other members in a friendly and informal atmosphere.
For new members who are just finding their way with sheep keeping, the Society runs an informal system of “mentors”; an experienced member of the Society who is local to you. It’s someone you can call on for a bit of advice; a friendly face you will know within the Society. If you think you would like to have a bit of support to help you get started, just get in touch with the Secretary.
